Defense Minister Gen Nakatani inspected the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) Yokosuka Regional Headquarters and its warships on Jan. 16. The minister addressed the sailors, saying in part: “We don’t know what might happen in the coming age. For the SDF to be caught off guard or to be unprepared or inadequately trained is unacceptable.”

Aboard the escort ship “Hyuga” the minister emphasized to MSDF members: “Japan is at a major turning point. Each citizen needs to seriously think about how to protect Japan’s territorial land, water, and airspace.”

By citing violations of territorial waters by Chinese vessels and near collisions between SDF aircraft and Chinese fighters, the minister said “(China) has repeatedly committed reckless acts that could develop into an unpredictable situation. We need to firmly protect what needs to be protected.”
