The business community in Yokohama is looking to launching a study group to boost the port city’s presence as an attractive casino resort site, sources disclosed to Kanagawa Shimbun on Jan. 15.

The central government is expected to submit again a bill to promote construction of integrated casino resorts to an ordinary Diet session, which will be convened this month. Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi is also very keen to host a casino resort in the port city.

The Yokohama Chamber of Commerce and Industry, headed by Kenji Sasaki, is working to set up a study group after April, which will be joined by members of its economic policy and urban development committees and university professors familiar with integrated casino resort projects. They will discuss a range of issues, including ways to promote the participation of local businesses in a casino project, measures to address gambling addiction and security concerns, as well as refurbishment of the Yamashita Pier, a major candidate site for a casino resort.
