The governments of Japan and the Philippines will hold a defense ministerial meeting in Tokyo on Jan. 29. Since Japan and the Philippines are faced with China’s maritime advancement in the East China Sea and the South China Sea, the two countries will confirm bilateral cooperation in such areas as maritime security. The two defense ministers will sign memorandums to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation. Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin will visit Okinawa on Jan. 30 to observe Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces’ units that conduct warning and surveillance activities and respond to airspace violation in Japan’s southwestern region.

The two ministers will agree to promote the training of Philippine military personnel by the Japan’s Self-Defense Forces (SDF). Since the Philippines, like Japan, often sustains damage from typhoons, the SDF will teach their Philippine counterparts disaster response knowhow such as rescue operations and road maintenance and improvement. The ministers will confirm bilateral cooperation in maritime security and disaster prevention.
