An Ainu group and their supporters plan to file on Jan. 30 a motion with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations claiming the government’s plan to build a cenotaph for Ainu remains previously collected by universities for anthropology and other studies violates their human rights.

A citizen group demanding Hokkaido University disclose documents on the collection of Ainu remains will hold an event at Zenroren Kaikan in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward at 18:00 on Jan. 30 under the title “Return Ainu remains to the Ainu.” Masaki Sashima, chairman of the Uraho chapter of the Ainu Association of Hokkaido who is spearheading the petition, and Morihiro Ichikawa, the group’s counsel, will deliver speeches. Admission is 500 yen. For inquires, contact at 0164-43-0128. (Abridged)
