Kyushu Electric Power Co. submitted its revised document necessary for the approval procedure for the reactivation of the No. 1 reactor at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Feb. 27. The utility will be required to obtain approval also for the reactivation of the No. 2 reactor because the 1 and 2 reactors share some of the same facilities. Considering the time required for the commission’s inspection of facilities after that, the No. 1 reactor will likely be reactivated in the summer or later.

The document submitted by Kyushu Electric was an application pertaining to a “construction plan” stipulating detailed plans for safety measures. The utility submitted a similar plan last October, but the commission made various suggestions for improvement. As a result, the volume of the construction plan has increased from 5,000 to 30,000 pages. (Abridged)
