The gist of the joint press conference by Prime Minister Abe and German Chancellor Merkel after the Japan-Germany summit held on March 9 is as follows:

 Prime Minister Abe

We agreed to take active roles for realizing peace and stability in Ukraine. We were able to deepen our discussions on the present severe security environment including the Asian region.

We confirmed that Japan and Germany will cooperate with each other in promoting the reform of the United Nations Security Council. In order to make the upcoming G-7 summit to be held in Germany this year a success, I promised that Japan as next year’s chair will make utmost contributions.

The Ukraine issue is a very serious matter. With respect to measures toward Russia, Japan will take appropriate actions with a focus on cooperation with the G-7. Although the situation is still premature for Russia to return to the G-8, we will seek the continuation of dialogue and call for Russia to play a constructive role in solving the Ukraine issue both diplomatically and peacefully.

 Chancellor Merkel

Japan is certainly our partner in Asia. We are cooperating on the issues of Ukraine, Iran, and Syria. My heart grieved when I heard that two Japanese nationals had fallen victim to terrorism. We must work together to combat terrorism.

We have been working to keep Greece in the Euro zone, but at the same time we need to take responsibility for implementing reforms.

In Germany after World War II, we held in-depth discussions on how we should respond to the crimes that we had to bear for the terrible atrocities committed by the Nazis. I had an opportunity to speak about Germany’s experience in which reexamination of the past became the premise for reconciliation.
