Following is the gist of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s press conference:

Fourth anniversary of Great East Japan Earthquake

I would like to express my sincere and deep condolences to those who lost their lives in the March 11 catastrophe. Though the pace of rebuilding is slow, we are making steady efforts to push reconstruction onto a new stage.

 Rebuilding of Fukushima

We will build new places and towns that can facilitate rebuilding efforts. We will make Fukushima home to cutting-edge research projects and new industries in the fields of robotic technology and renewable energy development. We will expand efforts to help rebuild businesses and people’s livelihoods, as well as reconsider compensation for damage, to help disaster victims get back on their feet. We hope to endorse a policy package aimed at rebuilding Fukushima as early as in May and outline a future vision designed to promote Fukushima’s self-reliance by around summer.

 Intensive reconstruction period

The five-year intensive reconstruction period will end in March 2016. We will draw up a new framework to support reconstruction for the next five years by around summer. As to securing funding for reconstruction, including financial burdens on local governments, we will intently listen to victims so as to assist them with great care.

Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

We will spearhead efforts on the decommissioning of the plant’s reactors and disposal of contaminated water and not leave the matter all up to Tokyo Electric Power Co. alone. To take the blame for producing nuclear waste, we will take the initiative in proposing places cut out for final waste disposal and securing such sites.
