LDP to set up project team to step up sanctions against Pyongyang

(Yomiuri: April 15, 2015 – p. 4)

A Liberal Democratic Party head office handling the issue of abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea decided on April 16 to set up a project team that will consider bolstering sanctions against Pyongyang and other measures.

The North promised to reopen investigations on their abductions of Japanese nationals, but little progress has since been made. The team will meet after the Golden Week holidays, which run from late April to early May, and submit recommendations to the government.

“A year will pass in July after North Korea started reinvestigations,” said Keiji Furuya, chairman of the party’s Headquarters for North Korean Abductions, after the meeting. “It is absolutely unforgivable to see the situation remain unchanged. We will discuss the matter, with an eye on imposing new sanctions.”
