Rear Admiral Hiroshi Ito of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF), who has been chosen to take command of a multinational antipiracy mission in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia, stressed the importance of the antipiracy mission in a meeting held yesterday in Tokyo. He said: “Since Japanese imports depend on ships, it would be very problematic if the movement of ships were blocked. Our livelihoods are surprisingly fragile.” This will be the first time for an SDF officer to take command of a multinational mission. Ito will take command of the mission at the end of May.
The commander of a multilateral mission is in charge of making arrangements for naval vessels and aircraft to be deployed by Japan and other countries.
