The ruling Liberal Democratic Party held on April 16 a joint meeting of its policy divisions, including the Treasury and Finance Division, in which the LDP heard views of experts on the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The meeting followed one held last week. At the meeting the view was raised that Japan should not make a hasty decision on whether or not to join the bank. The LDP plans to invite Asia Development Bank President Takehiko Nakao to the next joint session.

Takushoku University President Toshio Watanabe, who is knowledgeable about development finance and Asian economies, voiced doubts about whether the AIIB can implement high-quality investments and loans, by saying, “The AIIB has no philosophy.” He then added: “It is better for Japan to avoid a hasty decision.” Masahiko Shibayama, director of the LDP’s Treasury and Finance Davison, told reporters: “It would be difficult for Japan to participate in the bank before there is the prospect that a loan system similar to the ADB will be created.”
