The opposition Democratic Party of Japan will issue a party statement on the exercise of the right to collective self-defense next week, President Katsuya Okada told a BS NTV program broadcast on the evening of April 16.

Meanwhile, the party’s research commission on national security confirmed that the party will adhere to the concept of “surrounding areas” in legislation dealing with contingencies in areas surrounding Japan, which was introduced with a particular focus on the Korean Peninsula, and that it will oppose the government’s policy to revise the law to remove geographical restrictions on Self-Defense Forces activities.
