The supra-partisan “alliance of Diet members to promote the international tourism industry” is rushing to enact a bill (to lift the ban on casino gambling) to promote the construction of integrated resorts (IRs) with an eye on opening casinos before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, the resubmission of the bill is delayed. Initially the supra-partisan group had aimed to resubmit the bill by the end of March, but coordination with the Komeito party, which has expressed disapproval of the bill, have made little progress. Since the government has submitted a number of important bills to the current session, it remains to be seen whether the casino bill will be enacted during the ongoing Diet session. (Abridged)
