The Hayabusa 2 space probe succeeded in the first round of engine injection tests, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced April 27. It is scheduled to conduct an Earth swing-by on December 3 to change course.

JAXA said the spacecraft injected ion engines over about 400 hours in succession in March. It will move to the Earth after the second round of tests, which will be carried out in early June. It will do an Earth swing-by when it reaches less than 10,000 km away from the Earth to leave for the 1999JU3 asteroid.

The Hayabusa 2 is currently traveling 52.75 million km away from the Earth and will return home in 2020.
