A bill to revise the Act for Establishment of the Ministry of Defense was endorsed with a majority vote from the Liberal Democratic Party, the Komeito Party, the Japan Innovation Party and several others at the Upper House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense on June 9.

The revisions include removing a clause that civilian officials in the Ministry of Defense have supremacy over Self-Defense Forces officials in uniform and establishing a defense equipment agency. The new entity will act as a one-stop facility to cover from the research and development of weapons to procurement, with the aim of keeping operational costs low and strengthening international competitiveness.

The bill is expected to be passed at an Upper House plenary session on June 10.
