With the term of President Shinzo Abe expiring on Sept. 30, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party put forward on June 22 a policy of holding a presidential election on Sept. 20, kicking off the official campaign for the election on Sept. 8, according to a source connected to the LDP. The LDP’s rules stipulate that voting by Diet members should be held within ten days after the expiration of the presidential term.” Therefore Sept. 20 is the earliest date for holding the leadership race. Since the current session of the Diet will be extended to Sept. 27, the election will be held while the Diet is in session. The LDP apparently aims to prepare an environment for Abe’s attendance at the UN general assembly session on Sept. 25 or later.

It is believed that Abe will be reelected in the presidential race, possibly without a vote.
