In connection with the recruitment of a candidate for a by-election for the Hokkaido No. 5 district to fill the House of Representatives seat that was vacated as a result of the death of former Lower House Speaker Nobutaka Machimura, the Liberal Democratic Party’s Hokkaido No. 5 district branch selected Yoshiaki Wada, 43, the husband of Machimura’s second daughter, as its new head at a selection committee meeting on July 13 in Sapporo City. Wada is the deputy head of Machimura’s Sapporo office. The district branch will inform the federation of the Hokkaido LDP branches of its decision. The LDP headquarters will make the final decision on its candidate for the Lower House by-election.
Wada worked at Mitsubishi Corporation after graduating from Waseda University. He became a secretary to Machimura last December and has served as deputy head of the Machimura’s Sapporo office since May this year. Yoshihiro Iida, 42, a former secretary to a Lower House member who also applied for the candidacy, was defeated.
