Amid the surge of voices doubting, criticizing, and opposing the war legislation, the Abe cabinet’s support ratings are on a downward slope. The Abe cabinet’s disapproval rating topped its approval rating in the latest public opinion surveys released by NHK on July 13, Nippon Television Network’s Nippon News Network (NNN) on July 12, and the Asahi Shimbun (online) on July 13.
According to the NHK survey, the Abe cabinet’s nonsupport rate was 43%, up 9 percentage points from the preceding month, with its support rate at 41%, down 7 points from the preceding month. The Abe cabinet’s nonsupport topped its support rate for the first time since the launch of its second cabinet.
According to the NNN survey (conducted July 10-12), the Abe cabinet’s nonsupport (41%) topped its support rate (39.7%). Its support and nonsupport rates switched places for the first time since his rebooted cabinet came into office.
In the Asahi Shimbun survey (conducted July 11-12) as well, the Abe cabinet’s support rate was 39%, with its nonsupport rate at 42%. The second Abe cabinet’s nonsupport rate last topped its support rate in a serial survey conducted in November last year shortly before the election for the House of Representatives.
