At a press conference on July 14, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida commented on the fact that a number of human rights lawyers have been detained by authorities in China: “We must attach importance to freedom, respect for basic human rights, and the rule of law. I strongly hope that all Chinese people will be guaranteed these universal values.” In light of the recent crackdown on lawyers in China, Kishida emphasized: “We are concerned. We will make efforts to gather information and keep a close eye on the situation.”
