Regarding the possibility of a summit meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Park Geun-hye, South Korean Ambassador to Japan Yoo Heung-soo said on July 14: “I think it will be held before the end of the year.” He made this comment at a press conference in the Kumamoto prefectural government office. Suggesting that it will be possible for the two countries to hold bilateral talks when on the occasion of an international conference in the fall or later, he said, “I think a Japan-ROK summit can be held on the sidelines of a ROK-Japan-China summit.”

After saying that “the trend of bilateral relations has shifted,” Yoo cited as reasons the attendance of Abe and Park at ceremonies to commemorate the 50th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and the resolution of the “forced labor” issue regarding UNESCO’s designation of “sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution” as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
