Nikai to support Abe’s third term uncontested as LDP president

(Yomiuri: July 16, 2015 – p. 2)

Appearing on a BS Nippon Corporation news program on July 15, Liberal Democratic Party General Council Chairman Toshihiro Nikai said: “It is not necessary that the LDP presidential election will be uncontested, but it is most desirable that all party members support the uncontested election in an amicable fashion.” Nikai seemed to indicate support for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s third term as president of the LDP unopposed in order to maintain party unity.

Nikai took the view that a long-term administration is desirable for diplomacy, by saying, “I wonder whether a nation whose prime minister is (often) replaced can win the confidence of other countries.”
