Liberal Democratic Party General Council Chairman Toshihiro Nikai and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua delivered speeches during a Japan-China tourism meeting held in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, on July 25. Cheng said, “Japan and China experienced a most difficult time for a few years after the normalization of diplomatic relations between them.” He then stressed: “In view of history, I strongly hope that Japan and China will promote a mutually beneficial strategic relationship with an eye on a future-oriented relationship between them.”

Neither Nikai nor Cheng referred to China’s development of gas fields in the East China Sea or Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s statement to be released in August marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Nikai said: “We must live up to our responsibility for the future generations, while confirming mutual friendship.” He also said: “Japan needs to clearly convey at home and abroad its intention to totally oppose war.”
