Keidanren chief calls for reaching basic TPP agreement

(Asahi: July 25, 2019 – p. 7)

Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) Chairman Sadayuki Sakakibara voiced his expectation when he commented on July 24 on the final phase of the TPP negotiations. He said: “The ministerial meeting toward the end of July is effectively the last chance to reach an agreement. While it seems that a number of major issues remain, we hope that a basic agreement is reached from a broad perspective.” This statement was made at a news conference held after Keidanren’s “Summer Forum” in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture.

Many business executives also expressed their hope that the TPP will “broaden business opportunities.” One executive said: “We hope for an early agreement, and it is important to expand [the TPP] to include China and other countries as the next step.”
