Kyushu Electric Power Co. filed a final inspection application on July 25 with the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NAR) to reactivate Reactor No. 1 at its Sendai Nuclear Power Plant (Kagoshima Prefecture). If the inspection procedures go smoothly, the reactor will be reactivated as early as Aug. 10.

The Sendai Nuclear Power Plant is set to become the first nuclear power plant to be reactivated for the since the NRA introduced new safety standards following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant of Tokyo Electric Power Co.

The NRA will start the safety inspection on Aug. 3 and spend about one week checking to make sure the equipment is safe.

Kyushu Electric will hold a large-scale safety drill based on the scenario of a serious accident from July 27. If no problems are identified in the final inspection, it will be possible to reactivate Reactor No. 1 as planned. (Slightly abridged)
