Appearing on the BS Nippon Corporation “Shinso News” program on July 27, former Defense Minister Satoshi Morimoto and Waseda University Prof. Chikako Ueki discussed the government-sponsored security-related bills.
Pointing out that “the enactment of the legislation will enable Japan to demonstrate balanced deterrent functions,” Morimoto said: “Japan and the United States will be able to cooperate more closely than ever before” if the legislation that will support the updated Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation Guidelines is passed.
Ueki said the requirements for “crisis situations” that enable the exercise of the right to collective self-defense are vague, and she took the view that in order for deterrent strategy to succeed, it would be better for Japan to disclose when it will use armed force.”
