The Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Internal Affairs Communications Ministry raised the numerical target for increasing the percentage of female firefighters from the current 2.4% to 5% by April 2026 and the agency asked municipalities across the nation to hire more women at fire stations. The agency will try to improve women’s involvement in the sector in view of the percentage of female firefighters, which is lower than the ratio of female police officers (8.1%) and self-defense officials (5.7%). According to a survey by the agency, the number of female firefighters totaled 3,875 as of April 1. A total of 288 fire departments or 38% have no female firefighters.
