Japan’s beef exports are growing. Japan exported a record 670 tons (of major cuts) in the January-June period in 2015, the largest amount ever for the first half of the year. Foreign food service industries now find Japanese beef to be less expensive thanks to the depreciation of the yen. If the U.S. expands its low-tariff quota under the TPP talks, this will further boost exports.

The conclusion of TPP talks this weekend is likely to serve as a tailwind for Japanese beef exports. The U.S. is planning to raise the low-tariff import quota for Japanese beef to 3,000 tons first, eliminating tariff altogether over a period of 14 years. The current quota stands at 200 tons a year. Exports to the U.S. already reached 86 tons in the first half of this year, representing a 30% increase over the same period last year. Exports will reach the quota limit with further increase in demand.
