The following is the monthly ranking of bestsellers released by book wholesaler Nippan Shuppan Hanbai Inc. (NIPPAN) on July 31:




1.  Hibana by Naoki Matayoshi


Hibana is a much-talked about book written by a well-known Japanese comedian. This is Matayoshi’s first novel. The author writes about laughter and the meaning of life. Matayoshi writes honestly about the foundation of human existence.

The book won this year’s Akutagawa Prize.




2.  Kazoku to Yu Yamai by Akiko Shimoju

The book raises questions about the meaning of family.








3.   103 Sai ni Natte Wakatta Koto by Toko Shinoda

[What I Realized When I Turned 103]

Essays by a 103 year-old Japanese artist on how to live and enjoy life.








4.  Zekka: Kobe Renzoku Jido Sassho Jiken by Former Boy A

[Zakka: Kobe Child Murders]

The publication of this book has stirred controversy because it was written by a man who murdered two children and wounded three others in Kobe in 1997 when he was 14. The book includes descriptions of how the man felt when he committed the crimes.

[Naruto: Secret of Akatsuki – Evil Flowers in Full Bloom]

Naruto is a Japanese manga series. “Akatsuki Hiden” is the sixth installment of the manga series. The manga is available in over 35 countries and regions, making it the third best-selling manga series in history.
