Choe Okuno, the new president of the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, or JA-Zenchu, discussed rice prices and land improvement projects, such as construction of agricultural waterways, with Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Yoshimasa Hayashi on August 17.

Okuno and Hayashi appear to have agreed on the importance of keeping rice prices stable and the need to increase budgets for land improvement projects.

Okuno met with Hayashi for the first time since he took up the post.

The discussions were held behind closed doors. After the meeting, Okuno told reporters: “We discussed the need to make agriculture more competitive.” He also noted: “I told the minister that my mission is to protect rice farmers.”

Asked about the TPP and agricultural cooperatives reforms, he said, “We did not touch on the details.”
