Rice output in fiscal 2015 is expected to fall below the acreage reduction target. If the goal is achieved, rice production will be slashed for the first time since the government introduced the reduction policy in 1971 to keep rice prices stable.

According to preliminary data that the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) delivered to the Liberal Democratic Party on August 24, acreage of rice for consumption totals 1.412 million hectares this year. That is about 8,000 hectares less than the government target of 1.42 million hectares. If crop yields remain the same as last year, output is expected to fall by around 40,000 tons below the reduction target of 7.51 million tons.

The government is encouraging farmers to switch to growing rice for feeding livestock. According to MAFF data, acreage for feed rice totals 96,000 hectares this year. (Slightly abridged)
