The Ministry of Defense (MOD) clarified on Oct. 15 its policy of proceeding with landfill work for the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station (in Ginowan City, Okinawa Prefecture) even if the Okinawa prefectural government and the central government wage a legal battle. A senior MOD official explained this policy to the Liberal Democratic Party’s National Defense Division.
In response to Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga’s rescindment of the approval for the landfill work in Nago City, the MOD filed a request on Oct. 14 to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for the nullification of the governor’s cancellation. If the land ministry accepts the MOD’s application, Okinawa will likely file a lawsuit on the grounds that the suspension of its rescindment is unjust.
