Unprecedented movement by Chinese warship observed near Senkakus

(Sankei: November 13, 2015 – p. 1)

The Defense Ministry announced on Nov. 12 that it had observed a Chinese warship repeatedly cruising from east to west outside the contiguous zone south of the Senkaku Islands (Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture) between around 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 11 and around 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 12. The warship was sailing in international waters and did not enter Japan’s territorial waters.

The ship was a Dongdiao-class intelligence ship, and it was spotted by a Maritime Self-Defense Force’s P-3C patrol airplane. A Defense Ministry official said: “It was the first time for a Chinese Navy ship to be seen sailing in the area and its movement was peculiar. We are analyzing its intention.”

Meanwhile, a Japan Coast Guard plane observed the “Kan 407” Chinese marine research ship on Nov. 12 dropping spherical shaped objects into the ocean 90 kilometers southwest of Kumejima Island in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
