The Japan-U.S. Business Conference (JUBC), a gathering for Japanese and American executives to discuss economic and other issues, opened on December 3 in Washington, D.C. “I would like to request both the Japanese and U.S. governments to promptly ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement,” urged Japan Business Federation [Keidanren] Vice Chairman Kunio Ishihara (counsellor of Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd.) at the beginning of the conference.

Mr. Ishihara and John Lechleiter, chairman, president, and chief executive officer (CEO) of major pharma company Eli Lilly and Company, are serving as the Japanese and U.S. chairmen, respectively, at the two-day conference. Mr. Ishihara emphasized the job creation effect of Japanese companies in the United States, pointing out that “Japanese direct investment in the United States was the highest (on a country basis) in 2013 and second highest in 2014.” Mr. Lechleiter said, “The basic agreement on the TPP has further strengthened Japanese-U.S. ties.”
