In response to the basic agreement reached on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will expand support for Japan’s textile industry. In addition to encouraging capital investment in the sewing industry through subsidies, METI will also support commercial feasibility studies with an eye to securing overseas demand. Currently, the domestic production rate for apparel is only 23% on a value basis, and METI aims to raise that rate to 40–50%. METI will launch a study group in December and finalize countermeasures within fiscal 2015.
