The Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization (BPO) has criticized the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) for “exerting pressure” on Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) by summoning an NHK executive to explain the “fabrication” of [an episode of] its investigative news program Close-up Gendai. At his regular press conference on Dec. 3, NHK President Katsuto Momii said, “To see that as pressure is a little excessive.”

President Momii said, “That was when [NHK] executive went to explain (NHK’s) interim report. We have never been pressured about the program.”

In the opinion paper it released in November, the BPO’s Committee for the Investigation of Broadcasting Ethics criticized the LDP, calling the meeting “a clear example of a ruling party placing pressure [on a broadcaster].” President Momii explained, “We comply with requests to go and provide explanations regardless of whether they come from the LDP or an opposition party.” He continued, “If we were (ordered) to create a certain program, we would say, ‘We cannot comply with such a request.'”
