The government decided on measures to tackle children’s poverty on Dec. 21. Focus will be on supporting single-parent families and families with many children, and assistance to low-income families with three or more children will be expanded. From FY2016, all day care facility charges for the third and younger children will be waived for families with three or more children. At present, the third child only gets a 50% discount on day care facility fees after the first child goes to elementary school.

In addition to economic aid, educational support will also be expanded to break the “chain of poverty” where children of low-income families also remain poor when they grow up.

Childcare allowance for single-parent families will be increased by up to 100% from the second child down. (Abridged)
