Several weekend papers wrote that Japan was formally given a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council on Friday, noting that this allows the GOJ to increase its presence at the UN and within the international community. The GOJ is set to step up lobbying efforts for overhauling the UN’s powerful decision-making body by adding new permanent members. Yomiuri said as a new UNSC member, Japan will be called upon to exercise leadership to address such issues as the civil war in Syria, the migrant crisis in Europe, and the human rights situation in North Korea.
