Sunday’s Yomiuri speculated that in this year’s regular Diet session that opens today, heated discussions will be held on the TPP accord and a reduced tax rate for food and beverages, in addition to the FY2016 budget. The daily said that since deliberations on TPP-related legislation probably won’t begin until after the passage of the budget legislation in April, the GOJ might have difficulty securing enough time to achieve Diet ratification of the TPP pact.

Sunday’s Nikkei said the GOJ plans to submit seven items of TPP-related legislation, including one aimed at protecting domestic cattle farmers, adding that the GOJ predicts that the regional free trade initiative will take effect about two years at the latest after the final accord is formally signed by the 12 member states in New Zealand in February.
