Asahi reported that despite its strong statement denouncing Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test, the Obama administration has failed to block its relentless nuclear ambitions even though Washington has stepped up sanctions every time North Korea has carried out nuclear tests. Since the Six-Party Talks have been suspended for more than seven years, the daily said the U.S. apparently has no effective diplomatic tools other than counting on China to stop Pyongyang’s nuclear development. The daily added that as Washington is preoccupied with dealing with the situation in Syria and Ukraine, it has not been able to come up with a concreate strategy to counter North Korea’s nuclear program.

Mainichi said the Obama administration will be forced to conduct a review of its North Korea policy because Japan and South Korea may become increasingly skeptical of Washington’s commitment to defense against the threat posed by North Korea if Pyongyang continues to be allowed to proceed with its nuclear program in the absence of strong actions on the part of Washington.
