All papers focused on resentment expressed by the Chinese in response to North Korea’s alleged hydrogen bomb test, noting that the apparent absence of prior notification reflected the Kim regime’s strong distrust of Beijing. According to Asahi, the Chinese leadership was “enraged” by Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test. Although President Xi is likely to take concerted steps with the international community to impose enhanced sanctions on the DPRK, Beijing is also apprehensive that its defiant neighbor may become even more unpredictable and regional stability will be undermined if it is cornered too tightly.
