Sunday’s Yomiuri gave front-page play to a MOD plan to have an MSDF P-3C patrol plane make stopovers at bases in the Philippines, Malaysia, and/or Vietnam on its way home to Japan from Africa after participating in anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia, with the goal of holding China’s pursuit of maritime interests in the South China Sea in check. According to the daily, a Japanese P-3C travels between Japan and Djibouti every three months on anti-piracy missions. The expanded P-3C operations over the South China Sea will supplement the U.S. military’s “freedom of navigation” operations at sea.
