All Wednesday evening and Thursday morning papers gave extensive front- and inside-page play to President Obama’s final State of the Union Address delivered on Tuesday. The papers wrote that the President expressed the United States’ readiness to address such global issues as economy, climate change, and terrorism. The papers also wrote that the President indirectly criticized Donald Trump for his discriminatory remarks and urged Congress to swiftly approve the TPP agreement. Yomiuri called on the President to exercise leadership in dealing with North Korea, while Sankei wrote that the President should have directly criticized the DPRK in his address. Nikkei wrote that the President’s policy of “rebalancing toward Asia” did not play much of a role in his address because he did not mention North Korea.
