Several papers ran inside-page reports on press remarks made on Friday by Finance Minister Aso, during which he commented on the possibility of resuming a currency swap agreement with the ROK by saying that Japan is ready to cooperate with South Korea on the matter. However, the finance minister added that Tokyo has yet to receive a request from Seoul to hold discussions on the issue. Japan and the ROK ended the 14-year-old agreement in February 2015, but the South Korean side recently expressed readiness to resume the deal with Japan. Asahi conjectured that the recent improvement in Japan-ROK relations, including their bilateral agreement on the comfort women issue, is behind the momentum toward the resumption of a currency swap deal.
