According to the results of the latest opinion survey carried by Asahi this morning, approximately 63% of respondents supported the Japan-ROK accord on comfort women. Three out of five approved of Japan’s acknowledgement of the Imperial Army’s responsibility in running military brothels. On the other hand, almost half of respondents said it was not appropriate for the GOJ to pledge a contribution of 1 billion yen to the comfort women fund to be created by the South Korean government.
In a related piece, the same daily took up yesterday’s remarks at the Diet by PM Abe, who justified the using the words “the military’s involvement” in the comfort women accord. However, the prime minister also stated that no evidence has ever been found that the victims were “carted off” by Imperial Army soldiers against their will.
