It was learned on Jan. 19 that university students in Busan, in the southern part of the ROK, who are opposed to the final resolution between the Japanese and ROK governments on the issue of comfort women who served the former Japanese Imperial Army are planning to erect a statue of a young girl symbolizing the comfort women on the sidewalk in front of the Consulate General of Japan in Busan. This was revealed by the general student council of Pusan National University.

Under the Japan-ROK agreement reached last December, the ROK government promised to consult with the relevant groups and deal appropriately with the issue of removing the statue of a girl in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. The erection of a new statue in Busan may give rise to new friction between the two countries.
