The U.S. Obama administration sent an Aegis ship to waters within 12 nautical miles of Triton in the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. In this connection, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga welcomed the U.S. action, saying, “Our country has expressed support for the U.S.’s freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea.”

Suga reiterated that “China’s unilateral action that increases tension by changing the status quo through rapid land reclamation work in the South China Sea for bases for military purposes is a source of concern for the international community.” He stated emphatically: “It is extremely important for the international community to cooperate in protecting the open, free, and peaceful waters.”
