At a press conference after a cabinet meeting on Feb. 2, Justice Minister Mitsuhide Iwaki disclosed that his ministry had rejected 44 foreigners’ applications for permission to work in Japan by the end of 2015, because the applicants were seeking refugee status for the purpose of working in Japan instead of protecting themselves from persecution or other reasons. Since there are many foreigners who repeatedly apply for refugee status in order to continue working in Japan, the ministry had reviewed the system so that it would be able to strictly respond to applicants for refugee status for the purpose of working in Japan.
