At the House of Representatives Budget Committee meeting on Feb. 8, State Minister of the Cabinet Office Shuichi Takatori, who attended the signing ceremony for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact, was questioned about why he had been against the TPP in the past. He explained, “It is not that I have changed. It is that what I had initially feared and what the negotiations produced were two different things.” In May 2011, Takatori wrote on his blog: “The TPP is an abandonment of nationalism. Far from being the ‘Opening up the country in the Heisei era,’ it is the ‘betrayal of the country.'”
