At their plenary sessions on Feb. 9, both the Upper and Lower Houses unanimously adopted resolutions strongly protesting North Korea’s launch of what was essentially a long-range ballistic missile and urging the Japanese government to achieve a comprehensive resolution of both the nuclear and abduction issues through unilateral sanctions.
The House of Representatives resolution criticized the missile launch by saying, “This is a serious provocation that gravely threatens the peace and security of the region and the international community, including Japan.” The recent launch violates multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions as well as the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration. “It is absolutely unacceptable. We strongly protest and condemn North Korea.”
