At the Japan Innovation Party executive board meeting on Feb. 8, JIP leader Yorihisa Matsuno instructed general council head Jiro Ono to start creating the JIP party platform in preparation for the Upper House elections to be held this summer. The JIP hopes to merge with the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) before the Upper House elections so it is also considering drafting a joint campaign pledge with that party, but JIP will prepare its own pledge for use in the event that the two parties do not team up. The other aim behind creating a single-party pledge is to size up the DPJ leadership, which is cautious about dissolving the party.

At the press conference held after the board meeting, Secretary-General Masato Imai said, “We must prepare for unexpected events. The important thing is to make various preparations,” thus indicating that the party would prepare its own campaign platform in preparation for the possibility that the party enters the Upper House elections solo.
