Political donations to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from corporations have increased. The Asahi Shimbun tallied the amount of large corporate donations accounting for more than 3 million yen each to the People’s Political Association, the fund management organization of the LDP. In 2014, the LDP received about 1.4 billion yen, or about double the amount it obtained when the Democratic Party of Japan was in power.
The largest amount of donations came from the automobile industry (including companies dealing in parts and heavy machinery), accounting for 20% of the total or about 270 million yen. Toyota donated 64.4 million yen and Nissan provided 35 million yen. The industry that provided the second largest amount at about 190 million yen was electronics. The construction industry donated the almost same amount as the electronics industry, boosting its donations about 3.4-fold from the amount it offered in 2012. (Abridged)
